All CCMG members are invited to participate in an online CCMG Town Hall on May 29 at 1:00pm ET.
Over the past years, rapid advances in genomics have transformed clinical care across Canada. At the same time, there remains a concerning lack of clear, nationally endorsed requirements for safe and responsible genetic laboratory practice and for consistent, high-quality reporting of genetic findings. This gap presents risks to patients and challenges to our profession, particularly as genetic testing becomes more decentralized and widely adopted.
As the national organization responsible for training, certifying, and setting professional standards for clinical and laboratory geneticists in Canada, the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists is uniquely positioned to lead this work. Establishing clear criteria for laboratory accreditation and reporting standards will strengthen patient safety, support professional accountability, and equip us to advocate effectively for our discipline, including regulation for our laboratory colleagues.
This Town Hall is intended to be an open forum to:
- Share perspectives on current gaps in laboratory practice and reporting in the context of overwhelmed public and growing private laboratory practices
- Discuss national standards for accreditation and reporting and how we can advance this imperative
- Explore how CCMG can lead a coordinated, pan-Canadian approach to reach these objectives
- Identify champions in each province who can help advance and implement these standards locally
Your input is essential. Developing and sustaining standards of excellence will require broad engagement and leadership from across our membership. We strongly encourage you to join the discussion and help shape a process that reflects our shared values, supports high-quality care, and strengthens our profession nationwide.
