Objectives
At the end of the session, participants will be able to:
- Explain key concepts and terminology related to artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) as they apply to clinical genomics.
- Classify AI/ML approaches by their potential applications within clinical genetics practice, including variant interpretation, workflow optimization, and multi-omics analysis.
- Compare current AI/ML tools and approaches in genomic medicine and assess their relevance to clinical genetics workflows.

Dr. Lerner-Ellis has made transformative contributions to creating and building genetic database networks for inherited diseases and molecular diagnostics. His work has advanced standards, facilitated collaboration, and shaped ethical frameworks in the field of clinical genomics. His vision integrates clinical practice, research, and infrastructure development at individual and population levels. Dr Lerner-Ellis’ work bridges these domains to advance the scientific understanding of genomics and how genomic data is utilized in healthcare.

Dr. Marshall is a Clinical Laboratory Director in the Division of Genome Diagnostics at the SickKids Hospital and an Assistant Professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathobiology. He is board certified as a Diplomat of the American Board of Medical Genetics and Genomics and a Fellow of the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists. With expertise in clinical diagnostics and translational genomics, Dr. Marshall’s research focus is on applying genome sequencing and other omic technologies to end the diagnostic odyssey of patients living with rare disease. He was the inaugural Chair of the Medical Genome Initiative and recipient of the William K. Bowes Jr. Award in Medical Genetics. As a laboratory director Dr. Marshall leads the clinical genome sequencing and informatics program in Genome Diagnostics and aims to broaden the use of genome testing to improve the health of all patients at SickKids.

Dr. Tanya Nelson is an FCCMG Clinical Molecular Geneticist and Head of the Division of Genome Diagnostics at BC Children’s and BC Women’s Hospitals. She oversees provincial genetic and genomic diagnostic services supporting pediatric, adult, and maternal‑fetal care. A Clinical Professor in the Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at the University of British Columbia, Dr. Nelson specializes in the translation and implementation of emerging genomic technologies into healthcare system settings, including through the GSBC (Genome‑wide Sequencing BC) and CAUSES initiatives. She has served on multiple committees within the Canadian College of Medical Geneticists and contributes to the development of national guidelines and policies for genomic medicine.

Dr. Zovoilis is an Associate Professor of Bioinformatics at the Department of Biochemistry and Medical Genetics at the University of Manitoba and a senior scientist at Cancer Care Manitoba Research Institute. He is the director of the Bioinformatics Platform at Cancer Care Manitoba Research Institute and co-director of the Statistical Genomics and Bioinformatics Platform at the Rady Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Manitoba. Dr. Zovoilis’ research combines translational research in medicine, in particular aging associated diseases such as cancer and dementia, with basic research in bioinformatics. His expertise in bioinformatics of next-generation sequencing (NGS) is demonstrated by multiple leading or senior author scientific publications in distinguished journals such as Cell, Science, Elife, PNAS and EMBO Reports. Being the Academic Lead of BioNet Prairie, he works to foster research collaborations and partnerships in the fields of bioinformatics across Canada.
