Premise: The last decade has brought unparalleled technological advancements in the field of medical genetics. An unexpectedly high number of new genetic conditions has been characterized, our testing modalities and strategies are changing, and a growing number of approaches and trials for therapies are being developed. The rapid pace and scale of this progress is having an unprecedented impact on both the Canadian medical system and its workforce, particularly in medical genetics. Through this roundtable, we hope to engage the membership in an open discussion around the role of the medical geneticist of today—both laboratory and clinical settings—and begin imagining together how our profession should evolve in the foreseeable future.

Moderators:

Dr. Elizabeth McCready, GGD laboratory geneticist and CCMG President, McMaster University, Hamilton, ON

Dr. Michael Mackley, resident clinical geneticist in training at the Hospital of Sick Children and University of Toronto, Toronto, ON

Dr. Oana Caluseriu, clinical geneticist and President elect CCMG, University of Alberta, Edmonton, AB

Objectives:

  • To understand the current landscape of the Canadian geneticist workforce. Recent data collected based on CCMG-led surveys for laboratory and clinical geneticists will be presented. Preliminary data on a resident-led project to explore the current and future role of clinical geneticists will be outlined.
  • To recognize the role and impact geneticists have, and could have, on the Canadian medical system.
  • To explore how developments in medical genetics may change the role of geneticists in the next decade to offer competent, timely and safe evaluation and management to patients with genetic disorders in the Canadian medical system.
