Please participate in this survey: CPD Committee: Filling the genomics gap: what every healthcare professional needs to know. During this session we will share the survey results, and further define the genetic and genomic concepts that every healthcare professional needs to know.

The CCMG CPD committee would like to develop educational activities to address the genetic and genomic needs of the healthcare professional. Whether in the clinic or the laboratory, we respond to questions from other healthcare professionals with varying degrees of background genetics knowledge. We would like your input in identifying and prioritizing the needs of non-geneticist healthcare professionals. You can participate in either or both of the following ways:

  • Complete the online survey “Filling the genomics gap: what every healthcare professional needs to know”.
  • Attend the interactive session. During the session we will share the survey results, and further define the genetic and genomic concepts that every healthcare professional needs to know.

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Describe three scenarios where a healthcare professional’s lack of genomic knowledge can impact patient care.
  • Describe five genetic and genomic concepts that every healthcare professional needs to know.
  • List three or more public resources providing genomic knowledge to non-geneticists.

Target Audience: Geneticists

CanMEDS Roles: Leader, Scholar

Jillian Parboosingh is a molecular geneticist in the Genetics & Genomics Lab located in Calgary and an Associate Professor in the Department of Medical Genetics at the University of Calgary. She has 22 years of experience in clinical molecular diagnostics and human genetics research. During that time she has overseen the development and implementation of new technologies and tests into diagnostic service. She has a history of collaborative translational research identifying the underlying basis of genetic disorders using new technologies and implementing those technologies into the clinical lab. She readily shares her knowledge teaching molecular and medical genetics to undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate trainees as well as RCPSC Medical Genetics residents and CCMG fellows. As Chair of the CCMG CPD committee, she is keen to expand her interest in education to helping healthcare professionals gain and maintain genetic and genomic competency.
